Avril and David Howe
have been involved with yachts
since starting to sail professionally in the late 1960s. They met in
Newport during the Americas Cup year of 1974 and ran various boats
together until 1987 when Avril moved ashore.
They began Superfine in June 1990, and while Avril ran the business
full time, David helped out for the six months that he was home.
During the other six months he was on duty as captain of Mikado, a
job that he shared with another skipper. Since 1997, when Mikado was
sold, they have both been employed by Superfine, although David, as
the holder of a Class 4 ticket, signs on as captain for the
occasional delivery or relief job, and usually does three or four
transatlantic crossings a year.
